Stop the Madness

Stop the Madness

Every successful person I know has enormous bouts of worry from time to time. It comes with the territory of putting yourself out there and taking risks.

But when worry sets in, how do you stop it?

For me, worry usually jumps on me in the middle of the night.  I wake up with my mind racing about the 43 things that can go wrong and thing I think them over repeatedly.

How to make it stop?  Gratitude.

I simply stop the madness by taking control of what I think about.  I immediately begin thinking of all the things in my life that I am grateful for.

Just start listing it all.

It is amazing how quickly your body and mind will respond with peace and calm.  I dare you to try it.

As leaders, we have to learn that our minds work for us. We control what we pay attention and what we let go.

Think about that.

Let Success Do the Talking

Let Success Do the Talking

This is a tough one for a lot of people.  We all work hard, and as a result, it is sometimes tempting to tout how awesome we are.

Now, I get it.  You’ve got mad skills, but it is always better to have other declare your greatness before you do.

There is an old proverb that says, “It is better to be called up to the table of honor than to place yourself there and be cast aside.”

All to say, let honor come TO you rather than FROM you.

Sure, I know that in our business, we have to be our greatest cheerleader and fan. But the point here is to balance that with the “goods” to back it up.

When you do, the accolades will be more powerful to the hearer and more authentic as well.

You should be proud of your work.

Just let others say so first in the marketplace.

Think about that.

No, Really, It’s a Good Thing

No, Really, It’s a Good Thing

None of us like struggle. I get that. But I challenge you to think about all the BIG life lessons you have learned.

How many happened during a time when things were going incredibly well?

I bet not many. Probably none.

The truth is that struggle is a great teacher and helps focus us on what we need to do next.  All too often, it is easy just to sit and talk about why or how something cannot be done.

But the right action is to stand up and start moving.

The smallest forward action is all it takes to start momentum.  One small step after another can quickly give you a sense of moving forward, AND actually move you forward.

Funny how that works, huh?

So, I want to encourage you today, that although it may feel like you are stuck and have nowhere to go, your struggle is giving you mountains of rewards—IF you know how to look at them.

Think about that.

Breaking the Rules or Ruling the Rules

Breaking the Rules or Ruling the Rules

Renegade or Resident Expert—Which is it going to be? We all want to win and often we get tricked into thinking at the way to get ahead of everyone around us is to break the rules.

However, often, it is not about breaking the rules. It is about knowing the rules and simply being better at them than everyone else.

Expertise and mastery come from perfecting our craft and outperforming everyone else in your market.

Sure, sometimes the situation calls for creating your own path and your own rules, but do so cautiously.

More times than not, being better is truly…better.

So how do you know when to do what?

It all comes down to refining your internal compass and being crystal clear about who you are, what you want to be known for, and who do you want to be a hero to.

Settle those questions, and you will be more than fine in the journey.

Think about that.

Battling Words in the Air

Battling Words in the Air

Today’s Mindset stings a bit. As entrepreneurs and leaders we all love to dream. I mean, let’s face it, we live for that part of our life and business.

However, dreams are just words in the air and actually do not mean anything.

We have to take action to make a dream statement become a dream action.  This motion creates reality.

Now, before you say, “duh, right!?” Please allow me to elaborate…

Dreams, like wants, can be fantastic motivators, IF we put legs to them and are driven to action.  All too often, entrepreneurs and leaders like us we get our dopamine hit, aka the “feel good feeling,” just when we write down or verbalize what our dreams are.

Unfortunately, after we declare something to be, we actually have to go build the things to make it real.  Those “things” do not give us that same “feel good feeling.”

So what do you do?

For me, I break my goals and dreams down into smaller, more actionable steps, that I can assign timeline and rewards to.  That way, as I get things done, I can have small celebrations of success AND I start to feel momentum—which also drives me forward.

Think about that.
